Description
The Palliyagodella massacre was carried out by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) against the mostly Muslim population of the Palliyagodella and Ahamedpura villages located on the Polonnaruwa district border region in the eastern part of Sri Lanka. This incident marked the largest massacre of Muslim civilians by the LTTE to date. Village eyewitnesses claim that approximately 285 men, women, and children—around a third of the population—were killed by a 1,000-strong force of LTTE cadres who shot and hacked them to death. The terrorists attacked Muslim villages, resulting in the death of 172 civilians (171 of them Muslims), 12 policemen, and eight soldiers, with 83 others injured.
