Description
The Bandaranaike International Airport attack was a suicide raid by the Black Tigers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on 24 July 2001, targeting the Sri Lanka Air Force base (SLAF) Katunayake and the adjoining Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, Sri Lanka. A total number of 11 aircrafts were attacked, including two Israeli Kafir bombers, two Mi-17 transport helicopters, one MiG-27 fighter aircraft, three Chinese K-8 trainer aircrafts, and three Airbus planes. The attack also targeted fuel storages, with the total estimated loss reaching approximately $500 million.
